Dolmen dit Le Toad (Case B 161): classification by decree of 1 March 1978
Origin and history
The Dolmen du Crapaud is a megalithic vestige located at Les Granges, in the town of Billiers, Morbihan. This monument, dated from the Neolithic, is partially preserved: only part of the quadrangular chamber remains, while the access corridor has disappeared, probably due to the erosion of the cliff on which it was built. Its current state makes it impossible to determine precisely its original architectural type.
Ranked as historical monuments by decree of 1 March 1978, the Toad's dolmen illustrates the importance of megalithic sites in Brittany. These constructions, often linked to funeral or ritual practices, mark the landscape and testify to the expertise of neolithic communities. Their preservation allows us to study the lifestyles and beliefs of the populations of this period.
The location of the dolmen near the coast suggests a possible relationship with the maritime activities or cultural exchanges of the time. Dolmens, as collective structures, often played a central role in the social and spiritual organization of Neolithic human groups. Their distribution in Brittany, and especially in Morbihan, makes it a major archaeological heritage.
