Dolmen et tumulus du Genevrier (Case E1 113): ranking by list of 1889
Origin and history
The dolmen and tumulus of Genévrier are megalithic remains located in the commune of Salles-la-Source, in the department of Aveyron, in the Occitan region. These monuments date back to the Neolithic period, a period marked by the emergence of agriculture, breeding and sedentarization of populations. Their presence attests to the funeral and ritual practices of the local communities of that time, which erected stone structures to honour their deceased or mark symbolic places.
Ranked as historical monuments since 1889, this site illustrates the heritage importance of megalithic constructions in France. Aveyron, rich in prehistoric remains, has several similar sites, reflecting an ancient and organized human occupation. The dolmen and its tumulus, although little documented in the available sources, are part of a wider network of neolithic funerary monuments, characteristic of the protohistoric societies of the region.
Their preservation allows us to study the construction techniques and beliefs of the people of this distant period.
