Origin and history

The Dolmen de Marvejols is a megalithic monument dating from the Neolithic period, marked by the emergence of agriculture and livestock in Europe. This type of structure, usually associated with collective burials, illustrates funeral practices and beliefs of local prehistoric societies. The dolmens were often built with large stone slabs, arranged to form a room and an access corridor, covered with a tumulus of earth or stones.

Ranked among the Historical Monuments in 1889, this dolmen was one of the first protected archaeological sites in France. The precise location of the monument in Marvejols, in the department of Lozère, is indicated as approximate, with an accuracy deemed mediocre (note of 5/10). The site is now owned by the municipality, but the information on its accessibility or current vocation (visit, search) is not detailed in the available sources.

The region, then called Languedoc-Roussillon (now integrated into Occitanie), was in the Neolithic era a territory of cultural and economic transitions, marked by the gradual sedentarization of populations.
