Origin and history
The Dolmen de la Pierre Couplée, located in La Ferté-Frênel (delegated commune of La Ferté-en-Ouche), is a megalithic monument emblematic of the Neolithic. It consists of a sandstone cover table, measuring 3.50 meters long by 3 meters wide, now inclined southward. This slab rests on three pillars, a fourth having been removed in 1825 during archaeological excavations.
Ranked as historical monuments since 14 April 1944, this dolmen bears witness to the funeral and architectural practices of prehistoric societies in the region. Its present state, partially altered, reflects past human interventions, including 19th-century excavations. The precise location of the site, at 17 Rue de Gacé, makes it a point of historic interest accessible in the department of Orne.
The dolmen is part of a regional context marked by the presence of many megaliths, typical of Lower Normandy (now Normandy). These monuments, often linked to funeral or symbolic rites, illustrate the social and spiritual organization of neolithic communities. Their preservation allows us to study the construction techniques and beliefs of this distant era.
