Dolmen (Box N 866): Order of 4 April 1911

Origin and history

The Dolmen de La Plagne Tarentaise is a historical monument located in the commune of Mâcot-la-Plagne, in the department of Savoie (73). This megalithic site, typical of prehistoric funeral buildings, was officially recognized and protected by a classification order dated April 4, 1911. Its precise location, reported under cadastre N 866, is located near the Plan Orgere, in a mountainous area characteristic of the Tarentaise.

The dolmens, built of large erect stones, generally served as collective burials during prehistory. La Plagne Tarentaise is part of a set of similar remains scattered throughout the Alps, reflecting funeral practices and beliefs of neolithic communities or the Bronze Age. Although the archaeological details specific to this dolmen are not specified in the available sources, its ranking among the Historical Monuments underscores its heritage importance and its scientific value for the study of the ancient societies of the region.
