Origin and history
The dolmen of Pierre Cuberte is a megalithic building located in the commune of Job, in the department of Puy-de-Dôme, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Dated from Neolithic, this monument is located at 1,080 meters above sea level on the side of a hill overlooking a stream. Its anthropogenic nature is contested by some researchers because of its atypical structure and the absence of associated archaeological material.
The building is up to 7.20 metres long, 4.60 metres wide and 2 metres high. It consists of eight blocks arranged in anarchic way, covered with a single slab of slightly rounded cover. The "chamber", open east-southeast, could have been rectangular, with minimum dimensions of 1.50 metres long by 1.20 metres wide and 1 metre high. Two additional slabs, visible between blocks 2 and 3, have an indeterminate function.
The tumulus surrounding the dolmen, partially collapsed, is between 7 and 8 metres in diameter. No archaeological traces (tools, bones, objects) were found in connection with this monument. Despite these uncertainties, Pierre Cuberte's dolmen was listed as historical monuments by order of 12 July 1979, thereby recognizing his heritage interest.
The location of the site is approximate, with an accuracy estimated at 5/10 depending on available sources. The dolmen is referenced in the Mérimée database under INSEE 63179, corresponding to the town of Job. Its approximate address, derived from GPS coordinates, is indicated as "5274 Domas, 63990 Job".
