Origin and history
The Dolmen de la pierre Soupèze is a megalithic monument located in the commune of Montmorillon, in the department of Vienna (New Aquitaine). Built at an altitude of 160 meters, on the edge of a small valley, it dates from the Neolithic. Today very degraded, it retains three orthostats (vertical pillars) supporting an imposing limestone cover table measuring 3.50 m long by 3.10 m wide. The siliceous orthostats are between 0.35 m and 0.55 m high. Two other smaller slabs, visible on site, could be old collapsed supports. No associated archaeological material has been discovered to date.
The dolmen was classified as historical monuments by order of 19 July 1978, thereby recognizing its heritage value. The cover table is composed of Bajocian limestone, a rock characteristic of the region, while the orthostats are in siliceous breach, a local resistant material. The site is referenced in the Inventory of Megaliths of France (1996), which lists such monuments in the Vienna department. Its current state, though ruined, makes it possible to understand its original architecture and its integration into the landscape.
The location of the dolmen, reported as approximate (level 5/10 precision according to the sources), is at the following coordinates: 2 La Pierre Soupeze, 86500 Montmorillon. The site is identified under the code Insee 86165, attached to the commune of Montmorillon in the former Poitou-Charentes region, now integrated into New Aquitaine. No information is available on its accessibility to the public or any related services (visits, accommodation).
