Origin and history

The Dolmen de Verrières is a megalithic monument located in the commune of Verrières, in New Aquitaine (formerly Poitou-Charentes). This type of structure, characteristic of prehistory, was generally used as a collective burial. Although its exact construction period is not specified in the available sources, its inscription in the Historical Monuments by order of 19 January 1952 attests to its heritage importance.

Dolmens were funeral buildings built by neolithic communities. They reflect the religious and social practices of the time, where the deceased were often buried with offerings. In the region, these monuments have been markers of the landscape for millennia, testifying to the ancient human occupation and its collective organization around funeral rites.
