Origin and history
The Dolmen n°4 of the Adrets de Brignoles is a megalithic monument located in the commune of Brignoles, in the department of Var (region Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur). Daté du Chalcolithique, it belongs to a pivotal period between Prehistory and Antiquity, marked by the first uses of metal. This type of collective funeral structure illustrates the ritual and social practices of the sedentary communities of the time, often related to emerging agriculture and livestock.
Ranked as Historic Monuments by Order of 1 September 1988, this dolmen is subject to heritage protection because of its archaeological interest. The dolmens, typical of the final Neolithic and Chalcolithic, generally served as collective burials and symbolized the connection between the living and the ancestors. Their distribution in south-eastern France reflects a dense and organized human occupation, centred around water points and fertile land.
The approximate location of the site, near La Brignolette, suggests an anchor in a landscape still marked by these prehistoric remains.
