Origin and history
The Dolmens des Cudières are two megalithic monuments located in the commune of Jouques, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. These structures date from the Neolithic and Bronze Age, and were used as collective burials. They testify to funeral practices and the social organization of the prehistoric populations of this region.
Dolmen 1 was searched between 1987 and 1988, revealing two phases of use: a first in the final Neolithic and Chalcolithic (c. 2375 B.C.), and a second in the Ancient Bronze Age (c. 1820 B.C.). More than 100 individuals were buried there, confirming its role as a collective grave. Dolmen 2, however, has not yet been the subject of archaeological excavations.
These dolmens were registered as historical monuments by order of 25 March 1996, thereby recognizing their heritage importance. Their precise location on the commune of Jouques is indicated as approximate, with an accuracy deemed mediocre (level 5 of 10). They are protected as part of the region's megalithic heritage.
