Gabriel Bellier de la Borie - King's attorney in Bayeux
Transforming the park (1831-1866).
Origin and history
The castle of Castillon, a classical building, was rebuilt in 1762 on the remains of an oppidum of the Iron Age, where a monetary deposit was discovered. Its southern façade has a Louis XVI style, while its northern façade has a Management Board style. Inside, carved panels and painted panels, integrated with woodwork, recall its past prestige. The estate also preserves traces of its thousand-year occupation, with still visible taluté ramparts.
The park, originally designed in French in the 18th century, was partially transformed into an English park between 1831 and 1866 by Gabriel Bellier de la Borie, king's attorney at Bayeux. The latter modernized the green spaces, adding jumps, an avenue and a pond. The park extends around the castle, mixing classical heritage and landscaped romanticism, reflecting the aesthetic changes of the era.
A flour mill, certified in 1832, operated until 1963 and illustrates the economic activity of the estate. Its hydraulic wheel, renovated in 1944, operated partially preserved milling mechanisms: double flywheel, grinding wheels, blutery and flour chamber. The miller's housing and the adjoining barn complete this rare testimony of the rural milling organization. The mill, like the castle, was protected under the Historic Monuments in 1997, with its facades, roofs, and hydraulic system.
The estate of Castillon, registered in 1997, also protects the vestiges of the ppodum, the interior decorations of the castle (lounges, rooms), as well as the communes and the chapel. These elements underline its historical importance, from antiquity to its role as an aristocratic residence and local economic centre. The site thus embodies the continuity between ancient past, classical period and industrial heritage of the nineteenth century.
