Origin and history

The castle of Chantore, built in 1780 by a local lord, replaces an old castle, some of which remains near the Lerre. This 18th century estate, located in Bacilly in the English Channel, embodies the evolution of architectural and landscape tastes, moving from a medieval fortress to an aristocratic residence surrounded by a romantic park. Its history reflects the social transformations of Normandy, marked by changes in influential owners, including noble families and politicians.

The park, enriched by exotic trees in the 19th century by Auguste-François Angot, MP for Avranches, became a botanical setting under the impulse of Georges Genreau (1868-1906), former attorney general. The latter, passionate about botany, remodeled the park between 1868 and 1906 by integrating factories, a hydraulic system and rare species, such as a bicentennial camellia labeled in 2023. The estate, passed on to the Droüet family of Montgermont, remains a place of local power, with several mayors of Bacilly from this lineage.

Ranked a historic monument in 2021 for its facades, park and outbuildings, the estate opened to the public in 2018 after a restoration led by Bernard Legal and Iñaki de Goiburu. They developed guest rooms there and rehabilitated the park in English from archives, adding in 2025 a rose garden with creations by Roserist Christian de Chausey. The site, labeled "remarkable garden" in 2021, illustrates the sustainability of aristocratic heritages and their contemporary adaptation.
