Origin and history

The estate of the Baronie de Dovers-la-Delivrande was a seigneury dependent on the bishopric of Bayeux, attested from 1072 under the title baronnie. In the Middle Ages, this prosperous fiefdom housed a family close to William the Conqueror, several of whom became archbishops of York or bishops of Bayeux. The discovery of the miraculous statue of Notre-Dame de la Délivrande in the 12th century, under the administration of Beaudouin IV de Reviers, marked a spiritual turning point for the region. The bishops of Bayeux then used the estate as a secondary residence until the Revolution, sometimes welcoming personalities like Louis XI on pilgrimage.

The current buildings, classified as Historic Monuments in 1995, date back to the 13th-15th centuries and include a mansion (Grand Logis), a barn, and the ruins of the Saint-Symphorian chapel. The Grand Logis, restored to its medieval aspect, reveals 14th century murals and a typical structure of Anglo-Norman domains, with a large hall (aula) and private rooms (camera). The porterie and barn, rebuilt in the 14th to 19th centuries, testify to the evolution of the site, from a farm to a national property sold in 1789 for 50,400 pounds.

In the 20th century, the estate served as a dispensary in 1944 during the Liberation, before being acquired by the municipality in 1975. Archaeological excavations of the 2000s revealed remains of the large hall destroyed by fire, as well as decorative elements of the chapel. Since 2012, the Grand Logis, restored for 1.6 million euros, has hosted private receptions. The Blue Garden, created in the 20th century, houses the tombs of Yvonne Paulmier and Agnes Aignan, the last owners, in a mineral and vegetal setting inspired by Persian poetry.

The ensemble, lined with medieval walls on four hectares, illustrates Norman civil architecture and its link to religious history. The chapel, destroyed in the 19th century, remains only foothills and decorative quadrilobes, while the 20th century stables, under renovation, complete this site loaded with memory.
