Origin and history

The Pipière estate, located in Lignol-le-Château in the Great East, was built between 1909 and 1910 in a wooded massif overlooking the valley of the Aube. Sponsored by Maurice Piot (1875-1946), from a local family and future mayor of the village, this villa embodies the "Landscape regionalist" style in vogue at the time. Its architect, Paul Jouenne (born 1866), designed a compact hexagonal building, made of local stone, with red balconies and a slate roof, incorporating all the modern comforts of the period.

The estate includes, in addition to the villa, notable commons (including a spectacular low arch) and a park, reflecting the influence of the work of architect Louis Bonnier. Little modified since its construction, the ensemble illustrates the ideal of the bourgeois villa of the early twentieth century, combining landscape aesthetics and functionality. The site, including villa, commons and park, was inscribed in the Historic Monuments by order of 6 April 2016.

Maurice Piot, a local sponsor and figure, was also general councillor after being mayor of Lignol-le-Château. His choice by Paul Jouenne, a Parisian architect, emphasizes a desire for modernity while integrating into an architectural current valuing regional materials and forms. The villa, with its oriels and its elaborate views on the environment, bears witness to this synthesis between tradition and technical innovation for the time.
