Origin and history

The Montcaillou estate, located in Montfavet, a district of Avignon, is a mansion built in the second half of the 18th century. This type of residence illustrates the architecture of the country houses built on the outskirts of Avignon during this period, reflecting the way of life of local elites. The estate is distinguished by its aisle lined with plane trees, a landscape element characteristic of the properties of the era.

Partly listed as historical monuments since June 27, 1996, the Domaine de Montcaillou is protected for its facades, roofs, park and driveway. This official recognition underlines the heritage value of the ensemble, both for its architecture and for its landscaping, representative of the gardens and alleyways of bourgeois Provencal houses.

The location of the estate, in the Vaucluse, makes it a testament to the town planning and social practices of the region at the end of the eighteenth century. Master houses like this often served as secondary residences for wealthy families in Avignon, offering them a pleasant living environment outside the city, while remaining close to the economic and cultural activities of the urban centre.
