Origin and history
The Régismont estate, classified as a Historic Monument in 1937, is located in Poilhes, in the Hérault, at the foot of the plateau d'Enserune. This medieval site is marked by the presence of an oppidum discovered nearby, showing an ancient occupation. The excavations revealed the remains of a pre-Carolingian chapel as well as those of a Roman church called Othia, where sarcophagus were discovered. These discoveries suggest continuity of religious occupation and use in this territory.
The estate also includes notable archaeological remains, such as a cippe (burial or votive stele) and a statue, reinforcing its historical interest. Its perimeter, bounded by the Canal du Midi and the neighbouring municipalities of Capestang and Nissan, was protected by decree in 1937. Although the sources do not specify its exact use in the Middle Ages, its location near an oppidum and an ancient way (the plateau of Enserune) suggests a strategic or religious role in the region.
The accuracy of its current location is considered satisfactory (note 7/10), with an approximate address in Regismont le Haut, in the commune of Poilhes. No information is available on its current accessibility (visits, accommodation) in the sources consulted. The site thus illustrates the superposition of the epochs, prehistoric traces in medieval times, in a landscape marked by the Languedoc history.
