Origin and history

Domaine des Chaux is a monument located in Sury-le-Comtal, in the Loire department (42), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built in the first half of the 19th century, it is representative of the rural architecture of this period, marked by functional constructions such as dovecotes, often associated with large agricultural estates.

The dovecote of the Domaine des Chaux was included in the inventory of Historical Monuments by order of 15 January 1980. This type of building, once a symbol of prestige and wealth, was used to rear pigeons, an important food and economic resource for landowners. The location of the domain, at 1198 Route des Chaux, is attested by data from the Merimée database.

The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in the 19th century was marked by a rural and artisanal economy. Major areas such as lime played a central role in the local social and agricultural organisation, often linked to activities such as livestock farming, cereal farming or viticulture. These properties also reflected the social hierarchies of the period, with buildings dedicated to specific uses, such as the pigeon house, reserved for landowners.
