Origin and history

The Château du Bouëxic, located in the commune of La Chapelle-Bouëxic (Ille-et-Vilaine), is mentioned as early as 1427 in the archives. He then belonged to the family of the Third, then passed to the hands of the Bouëxic (XVIth–XVIIIth centuries), the Quesnel de la Morinière (1806–1824), and finally the Menou until 1949. The estate, endowed with a right of high justice and patibular forks, was looted and its archives burned in 1790 during the Revolution. Today, it is privately owned after being sold by the municipality.

The castle, which has been listed as a historic monument since 2015, consists of a rectangular house body with a dardian roof, an orangery, stables, and a park with pond, fountain and wood. Its classical architecture, marked by tufa frontons and rigorous symmetry, reflects seigneurial power. The south staircase recalls the Fontainebleau staircase, although more modest. The entrance on the village side leads directly to the parish church of Saint Joseph, integrated into the estate.

Since 2017, the castle belongs to the Madre family, which has transformed it into a place of escape games and waller parts inspired by universes like Alice in Wonderland. These activities, organised on Friday and Saturday evenings, partially fund its restoration, launched through a crowdfunding campaign in 2022. The southern park is now dedicated to blueberry cultivation, diversifying the uses of the estate.

The estate also includes commons (pigeon, farmhouse, pavilions), aisles, water bodies and fence walls, protected by the 2015 inscription. Unlike Guipry Castle (destructuring), La Chapelle-Bouëxic has retained its architectural unit despite internal divisions in the 20th century, now restored by its present owners.
