Origin and history
The Donjon de Colombières-sur-Orb is a 14th century medieval vestige, the last standing element of the old castle of Caroz. Located at the place known as "le Battut", on the commune of Colombières-sur-Orb (Hérault), it overlooks the brook of Albine. This square dungeon, surmounted by slots, is nicknamed "Château du Diable" or "Château des Anglais". It has been listed as a historical monument since 1939 and was restored in 2014.
The castle of Caroz, originally dating back to an early period around 1036, belonged to the Viscounts of Carcassonne in the 12th century. Only the 14th century dungeon remains today, reflecting the strategic importance of the site. The sources also mention its connection to Caylus Castle, although the precise details of this relationship remain unclear.
The protection of the dungeon was formalized by an order of 28 June 1939, specifically covering the structure designated as Cadastre A1. Its current condition and access (visit, rental) are not specified in available sources, but its heritage interest is recognized by its presence in the Merimée and Monumentum bases.
