Origin and history
The Donjon de Larroque, located in the eponymous village of Haute-Garonne, is the last vestige of the mansion of the Counts of Sabran, built in the 12th century. This imposing tower, classified as Historic Monument since 1930, retains a window fifteen meters high giving access to a square room paved with slabs, overlooking the old oblivions. The surrounding ruins, including fragments of walls, drawbridge and chapel, attest to the past importance of this fortified site.
Around the dungeon remain traces of the enclosure that once protected the castle, now partly covered by the communal cemetery. The GPS location, although imprecise (level 5/10), places the monument close to the place called Loubopelado. Owned by the municipality, the site retains a major heritage value, although its accessibility and current uses (visits, events) are not detailed in the available sources.
Local history evokes a defensive and residential role for this mansion, typical of Occitan seigneurial constructions of the Middle Ages. The Counts of Sabran, although mentioned as owners, are not subject to any biographical or historical details in the documents consulted. However, the designation of Historic Monuments in 1930 underscores its architectural and memorial importance to the region.
