Facades and roofs (Case AC 781): inscription by order of 12 July 1963
Origin and history
The two wooden houses of the Place de la Liberté in Pont-du-Château date from the 16th century. Their architecture is characteristic of late medieval buildings, with a wooden frame forming crosses of Saint Andrew, partially hidden under a crepi. The ground floor has undergone changes, including the replacement of its two openings. These houses are a typical example of the urban habitat of the time, where wood was widely used as building material.
The second floor of these houses is in corbellation, supported by a row of consoles whose lower ends end with carved caps. This architectural technique allowed to gain space in height while adding an aesthetic dimension. The wooden frame consists of two rows of superimposed frames, between which are inscribed the cross motifs of Saint-André, typical of the period.
These houses were partially protected, with an entry in the inventory of Historical Monuments by decree of 5 August 1963, specifically covering the facade and roof. Their location on the Place de la Liberté, in the heart of Pont-du-Château, makes it a notable heritage element of this town of Puy-de-Dôme, in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
