Origin and history
The two wooden houses located at numbers 5 and 7 of Rue des Trente in Josselin date back to the 17th century. Their structure combines a base and a south gable in shale stone, while the upper floors are made of wood, slightly protruding for the corner house. The latter connects to the concierge of the neighbouring castle by its western facade. An inscription on the house indicates its construction in 1624 by a certain Louys Piechel, whose name and date are engraved: "LOVYS PIECHEL AN 1624". The interiors were transformed in the 19th century, partially changing their original appearance.
A dendrochronological study conducted in 2022 indicated that the wood of the facades and floors was used between autumn 1622 and winter 1623, thus confirming the historical dating. These houses, protected by a decree of 21 March 1935, bear witness to the Breton civil architecture of the modern era, with construction techniques combining masonry and visible structure.
Their location in the immediate vicinity of the castle of Josselin suggests a link with the medieval and modern urban organization of the city, where bourgeois or artisanal dwellings often bordered the outskirts of fortifications or seigneurial residences. Their preservation provides a rare example of wood-pan habitat in Morbihan, a region where this type of construction is less frequent than in Great Britain.
