Origin and history
The colonial school, located at 2 avenue de l'Observatoire and 9-11 rue Auguste-Comte in the 6th arrondissement of Paris, is a historical monument built during the last quarter of the 19th century. This building, representative of the institutional architecture of the period, is distinguished by its facades on streets and courtyards, its large staircase, as well as by remarkable decorative elements such as the gallery of landscapes signed Fraipont on the ground floor. These characteristics led to its partial registration under the Historical Monuments by decree of 28 January 1992, covering in particular the library on the first floor.
The accuracy of its location is assessed as fair (note 5/10), and its official address is listed in the Merimée database under the code Insee 75106, corresponding to the city of Paris. Although available sources (Monumentum, internal data) do not specify its current use, the building retains a heritage value linked to its colonial history and architecture, marked by the intervention of Maurice Yvon, the architect identified in the archives.
The protected elements of the monument include, in addition to facades and stairs, a gallery decorated with landscapes and a library, reflecting the importance attached to aesthetics and the educational function of the period. The Creative Commons license associated with the photographs of the monument (credit: Marc Baronnet) facilitates the dissemination of his image, contributing to his reputation in the Parisian heritage of the nineteenth century.
