Origin and history

The École du Lau (or Dulau), located in Arles in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, is a building whose architectural history is partially documented. The monument is distinguished by its facades on street and courtyard, as well as by a remarkable door, known as "Porte du Lau", which has earned the whole a double protection under the Historical Monuments. These elements, characteristic of his identity, were inscribed and classified between 1946 and 1950, marking their heritage importance.

The school is located at 24-26-28 rue du Quatre-Septembre (or 4 September), in an urban area of Arles, emblematic city of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Although the available sources do not specify its initial construction period, the protection orders of the mid-20th century suggest a late recognition of its historical value. Its architecture, with wings flanking a monumental entrance door, evokes both educational and symbolic use in the Arlesian urban fabric.

The legal protections relate specifically to the facades of the wings surrounding the entrance door of the building to n°26, as well as the "Lau Gate" itself and the façade of the school. These measures, taken in 1946 and 1950, underline the interest in preserving its built heritage, without the sources, however, detailing its functional history or possible past uses.

Arles, a city rich in Roman and medieval heritage, houses this monument as a witness to a more recent era, where schools and public institutions have played a growing role in social organization. The École du Lau is thus part of a dynamic of valuing buildings related to education and local history, although the accessible archives do not allow to accurately trace its evolution or its founders.

The school's location, indicated with an accuracy deemed "a priori satisfactory" (note of 6/10), and the associated GPS coordinates confirm its anchoring in the city centre of Arles. The photographs available under the Creative Commons license, such as the one credited to Finoskov, offer a visual overview of its protected facades, but text sources remain limited on its overall historical context.

In the absence of details on its foundation, architects or major transformations, the École du Lau remains an example of a monument whose reputation rests above all on its preserved architectural characteristics. Its ranking among the Historical Monuments makes it a notable part of Arlesian heritage, inviting further research to shed more light on its history.
