Origin and history
The Mathenay School-Mary is a neo-classical public building in the Jura department, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Its construction, completed in 1848, reflects the civic architecture of the July monarchy, a period marked by a boom in public buildings combining utility and aesthetics. This type of monument, both a place of education and an administrative seat, illustrates the centralization of municipal services in the rural communes of France in the 19th century.
The building was designed by architect Narcisse Perrard, a local figure whose work is part of the neo-classical current, focusing on symmetry and sobriety. In 1876, an extension dedicated to fire pumps was supported by the building, reflecting the evolution of communal needs. The front façade and the vestibule, with its staircase, were protected by a registration order in 2007, highlighting their heritage value.
Located at 3 rue de la Planche, this monument remains property of the municipality of Mathenay. Its state of conservation and location, assessed as "a priori satisfactory", make it a representative example of the franc-comtois rural heritage. The photographs available, such as that of Benoît Prieur (2023), document his current aspect, while the Mérimée archives specify his address and his Insee code (39319).
