Origin and history

The Ferrières Kindergarten School, located in Martigues (Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur), was built in the 3rd quarter of the 20th century and inaugurated in September 1952. Sponsored by the Ministry of National Education, it is the result of collaboration between architects Alphonse Arati, Marius Boyer, Charles Lestrade and engineer Jean Prouvé, pioneer of light metal structures. The building, which has been listed as a historic monument since March 19, 2001, illustrates an industrial approach with bolted steel and glass components associated with exposed stone walls. Its plan organizes three distinct spaces: traffic, classrooms/winter garden, and protected courses.

Jean Prouvé deploys technical innovations such as aluminium window panels and bent sheet crutches designed for mass production. The first plans date back to 1947, reflecting a desire to modernize post-war school architecture. The building, owned by the commune of Martigues (département des Bouches-du-Rhône), marks a turning point in the design of schools, mixing educational and industrial aesthetic functionality.

The inscription in the title of historical monuments underlines its heritage value, both for its avant-garde architecture and for its role in the history of education in France. Materials (steel, aluminium, stone) and bolt assembly are evidence of an era when industrialisation even influenced public equipment. Today, the school remains a symbol of the architectural renewal of the Thirty Glories in southeastern France.
