Origin and history

The École nationale supérieure d'arts et métiers de Châlons-en-Champagne was founded in 1780 by the Duke of La Rochefoucault-Liancourt. Transferred to Châlons-en-Champagne in 1806, she moved to buildings previously occupied by the Artillery School (1790–1802), which was established in the former major seminary (1781–87) and the convent of the Regent Ladies (1759–63). This transfer follows Bonaparte's decision to move the artillery school to Metz, thus releasing the premises for the Arts and Crafts.

The evolution of the school in the 19th century led to important architectural changes. The former seminary becomes the residence of the pupils, while the convent of the Regent Ladies houses successively workshops, then the residence of the director. In 1853–54, architect Charles-Edouard Isabelle built the infirmary and renovated the central façade of the Regent Ladies. After a fire in 1895, the workshops were rebuilt in two phases: a machining workshop in the late 19th century, and a foundry after the First World War.

Some parts of the site are protected as historical monuments, including the facades and roofs of the former seminary, the Empire Pavilion (infirmary), and the Convent of the Regent Ladies, classified or registered between 1984 and 1997. Internal courtyards, grills, and elements such as the directional stairwell or the infirmary garden are also subject to preservation measures. These protections highlight the heritage value of a combination of religious heritage and industrial adaptations.

The school is part of a national network, with 10 other Arts and Crafts campuses in France. Its history reflects the educational and technical changes of the country, from the Industrial Revolution to the 20th century. The partial destructions in 1995 (Octave Gélin workshops) to expand teaching spaces mark a recent stage in its evolution, between preservation of heritage and modernization of infrastructure.
