Origin and history
The Upper Country and Transport Ecomuseum is located in the former Breil-sur-Roya locomotive depot, located near the SNCF station, about 60 km northeast of Nice. This site, integrated with the Alpes-Maritimes department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, highlights an exceptional railway heritage. The museum houses steam and electric locomotives, railcars, trams, as well as a miniature network reproducing landscapes of the Tende line, famous for its history and technical challenges.
The collections include major parts such as the steam locomotive 141 R 1108, the electric locomotives BB 8238 and CC 7140, and the train of Wonders X 2804, a symbol of the Alpes-Maritimes. About 30 road vehicles, including trolleybuses and buses, complete the exhibition, some of which are offered for rent. These objects illustrate the evolution of transport in this border region, marked by mountainous reliefs and transalpine exchanges.
Open seasonally from 1 May to 10 October, on weekends, the ecomuseum welcomes visitors for a low price (5 € for adults in 2021, free for children). Its location, in a converted industrial building, highlights the link between technical heritage and local memory, while offering an immersion in the world of 20th century transport.
