Origin and history
La Belle-Croix is a 16th-century oratory erected in Uchon, in the department of Saône-et-Loire, in the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. Located at the entrance of the village, it is distinguished by its location in a landscape of moors, close to the church and the ruins of the castle of Uchon. This modest monument was a place of devotion where pilgrims gathered to plead for protection against plague outbreaks, reflecting the health and religious fears of the time.
The Oratory was registered as a Historic Monument by an order of 9 December 1929, thus recognizing its heritage value. Owned by the commune of Uchon, it is part of a historical context marked by rural Christian architecture and practices of collective piety. Its location, between the village and the surrounding natural spaces, highlights its role both spiritual and social in local life.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, specify that the church is also known as the Belle Croix and that it is part of the religious heritage of Saône-et-Loire. Although its exact location is estimated as "passible" (level 5/10), its approximate address is identified as 5049 Le Bourg, 71190 Uchon. No information is provided on its current accessibility or contemporary use.
