Origin and history
The Guimard building of the Republique station is a secondary access to the Paris metro, designed in 1900 by architect Hector Guimard for the Compagnie générale du Métropolitain. It is one of the emblematic Art Nouveau achievements of the network, inaugurated in 1904 with line 3. This edicle, located at the corner of the Place de la République opposite the boulevard Magenta, has been protected since 2016 for its heritage importance.
The République station, under which this edicle is located, is a major hub of the Parisian network, served by lines 3, 5, 8, 9 and 11. Opened gradually between 1904 and 1935, it was the first to benefit from elevators in 1910. Its architecture has evolved with successive renovations, notably in "Andreu-Motte" style for lines 8, 9 and 11, and "Oui-dire" for line 3.
The square of the Republic, under which the station extends, gave its name to the latter because of the monumental statue erected in its center. The Guimard edicle, although of secondary type, embodies the visual identity of the Paris metro of the early twentieth century. It is now classified as a Historical Monument, bearing witness to the architectural heritage of Hector Guimard.
In 2016, the entourage of this access was registered by decree to preserve Guimard's remaining achievements. The station, with its 16.6 million annual travellers in 2019, remains one of the busiest in the network, while having undergone recent upgrades, such as the renovation of line 11 docks in 2018.
