The bronze mascaron of the former fountain: inscription by decree of 12 January 1962
Origin and history
The building located at 12 rue Garancière, in the 6th arrondissement of Paris, dates from the 1st quarter of the 18th century. This building, typical of the Parisian architecture of the period, is distinguished by its history linked to an ancient fountain, whose bronze mascaron was preserved. This mascaron, an iconic decorative element, is the only protected vestige of this extinct fountain, bearing witness to the artistic and urban heritage of Paris under the Ancien Régime.
The bronze mascaron of the former fountain was registered under the Historical Monuments by order of 12 January 1962. This official protection underscores its heritage importance, although the other elements of the fountain have disappeared. The building itself, although completely unprotected, retains historical value as a witness to the Parisian urbanism of the early eighteenth century, a period marked by the beautification of the city under the influence of the great royal works.
The location of the building, in the 6th arrondissement, places this monument in a historical area, close to the left bank and its cultural and religious institutions. The rue Garancière, although less known than other Parisian arteries, is part of an urban fabric where bourgeois housing and handicrafts are mixed, reflecting the social diversity of Paris at that time. Today, the building remains a discreet but significant example of the capital's civil architectural heritage.
