Origin and history

The building 4 Magnanat Street in Sarlat-la-Canéda is a hotel whose origins date back to the 15th century. Several architectural elements of this era remain, including characteristic doors and windows. These vestiges testify to its initial status as an urban hotel, probably linked to the rise of the local bourgeoisie or to administrative functions in a then prosperous city through commerce and seigneurial justice.

In the 18th century, the building underwent major changes. The windows are modified to fit the aesthetic cannons of the time, and a monumental porch is attached to the facade. This porch, framed by ionic pilasters and surmounted by a volute pediment, illustrates the influence of classicism in the civil architecture of the region. These changes may reflect a change of ownership or a desire to modernize, in a context where Sarlat-la-Canéda remains an administrative and judicial centre active under the Old Regime.

The building has been partially protected under the Historic Monuments since 24 February 1944, with an inscription covering the facades, roofs and entrance porch. This official recognition underscores the heritage value of the building, mixing medieval heritage and Enlightenment. Today, its location in the city centre and its state of conservation make it a tangible testimony to the architectural evolution of Sarlat, a city marked by its medieval past and its revival in modern times.
