Façade sur rue des Lauriers (cad. AB 296): inscription by order of 27 February 1946

Origin and history

This building, located at 5 rue des Lauriers (formerly rue de la Harpe) in Saint-Malo, dates from the 17th century. It integrates into the historical urban fabric of the corsary city, marked by its primitive fortified enclosure. Although its exact use is not specified in the sources, its architecture reflects the constructive techniques of the time, adapted to the defensive and maritime constraints of the city.

The façade on Rue des Lauriers was protected by a registration order for the Historic Monuments on February 27, 1946. This classification reflects its heritage value, particularly for its characteristic style of the 17th century Breton. The building is located in an area where cartographic accuracy is considered poor (level 5/10), according to available data.

Saint-Malo, in the seventeenth century, was a strategic stronghold, oriented towards the sea and trade. Buildings such as this often served as dwellings for merchants, shipowners or officers associated with port activity. Their preservation makes it possible today to understand the social and urban organization of the city under the Old Regime, between residential functions and defensive imperatives.
