Origin and history
The building at 4 rue des Loups in Nancy dates back to the 17th century, when the city, then capital of the Duchy of Lorraine, saw the building of many private hotels by noble families. These buildings reflect the influence of an active ducal courtyard and the architectural influence of the region, marked by varied styles, from Renaissance to Classicism.
In the 17th century, Nancy attracted renowned architects such as Germain Boffrand, who worked for Duke Léopold I of Lorraine. Private hotels, often concentrated around emblematic squares such as Alliance Square or Carrière Square, undergo stylistic transformations, especially under the impulse of Emmanuel Herere in the next century. These buildings, sometimes protected as Historic Monuments, testify to the evolution of tastes and local power.
The building on Rue des Loups, partially protected since 1946 (gateway, vantals and wells), illustrates this civil heritage. Its inscription is part of a desire to preserve the material traces of Lorrain history, between medieval heritage, classical influence and, later, current Art Nouveau. The precise location and architectural quality of these buildings make them key elements of the naturalized urban landscape.
