Origin and history

The building of the 36 quai de Béthune, in the 4th arrondissement of Paris, is a private hotel built between 1641 and 1644 for Pierre Viole, adviser to Parliament. This building of the first half of the seventeenth century illustrates the aristocratic residential architecture of the period, with a monumental staircase cage today protected. Acquired in 1770 by the Perrot family, the hotel underwent important works.

In the 19th century, Jules Jaluzot, founder of Le Printemps stores, made major changes. The site gained an additional historical dimension by sheltering Marie Curie from 1912 to 1934, when the scientist resided there. The stairway, with its ramp, has been listed in the Historical Monuments since 1999.
