Facade on street and corresponding roof; stairwell with its wrought iron ramp (Box IO 183): inscription by order of 23 March 1990
Origin and history
This building, located at 22 rue Georges-Clémenceau in Clermont-Ferrand, dates from the 2nd half of the 18th century. It is part of the western alignment of this street, pierced at the site of the old city walls. Its façade, with a lightly advanced forebody, features a salient chambranle and bossing chains adorned with floppy-folded modillons. These architectural elements, typical of the classic style, highlight the sober elegance of the building.
The stairwell is one of the major assets of the building, with an interlaced ironwork and a wooden handrail probably added in the 19th century. It is considered one of the largest 18th-century stairwells in Clermont-Ferrand. The bays on the ground floor and the windows, with prominent vaults, have slightly curved flats, strengthening the harmony of the whole.
Ranked Historic Monument by order of 23 March 1990, the building specifically protects its street façade, corresponding roof and stairwell with its wrought iron ramp. These elements illustrate both the artisanal know-how of the time and the urban evolution of Clermont-Ferrand, between medieval heritage (disappeared departures) and modernity of new neighborhoods.
The rue Georges-Clémenceau, where the building stands, symbolizes this transition. Its layout, created in the 18th century, marks the boundary between the historic centre and the more recent extensions of the city. The building, with its preserved architectural details, offers a tangible testimony of this pivotal period, when Clermont-Ferrand transforms under the influence of the Enlightenment and more rational urbanism.
