Facades and roofs (Box BC 184): classification by order of 3 October 1941
Origin and history
The buildings located 5 Place De-Gaulle in Orléans, currently occupied by the Departmental Service of Architecture and Heritage (SDAP), date from the 16th century. Their architecture reflects the characteristics of this period, marked by the transition between late Gothic and early Renaissance influences in France. These buildings, although transformed over the centuries, retain structural and decorative elements typical of their construction era.
Classified Historic Monument by order of 3 October 1941, these buildings are protected for their facades and roofs, as evidenced by their record in the Mérimée base. Their location in the centre of the city of Orleans, an emblematic square today named in honour of General de Gaulle, underlines their importance in the historical urban fabric. The accuracy of their location is assessed as "a priori satisfactory", according to the criteria of the heritage database.
At the time of their construction, Orléans was a dynamic city, marked by its commercial and strategic role between the Paris basin and the Loire Valley. The buildings of this period were often used as houses for merchants, artisans or local notables. Their preservation until today illustrates the attachment to this architectural heritage, today reinvested by public services dedicated to safeguarding the heritage itself.
