Origin and history

The building at 510-514 rue Nationale in Villefranche-sur-Saône is a typical example of small bourgeois houses built between the late 15th and early 16th centuries. It is distinguished by its two-storey wooden gallery, a rare architectural element preserved since its origin. The façade overlooking the street, however, was changed during the 19th century, reflecting the urban evolutions of this period.

Ranked as a Historic Monument, this building was protected by two separate protections: an inscription in 1990 covering the entire building (except those already classified), followed by a classification in 1995 for its wooden gallery and the corresponding elements of the facade and roof on the courtyard. These measures highlight the heritage value of its medieval structures, including the gallery, a witness to the constructive techniques of the time.

The property is shared between a private owner and Villefranche-sur-Saône. Although the information on its current use (visit, rental, etc.) is not specified, its location in the city centre and its state of conservation make it an important marker of the local architectural heritage. The accuracy of its geographic location is estimated as "passible" (note 5/10), based on available data.

The building is part of the urban context of Villefranche-sur-Saône, a city marked by its commercial and bourgeois history since the Middle Ages. Gallery houses, like this one, often illustrated the social status of their owners, while serving as places of life and artisanal or commercial activities. Their conservation today offers an overview of the lifestyles and spatial organization of cities at the crossroads between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
