Origin and history

The Church of the Immaculate Conception of Grand-Bourg is a Catholic religious building located on the island of Marie-Galante, in the department of Guadeloupe. Built between 1827 and 1847, it is dedicated to the Virgin Mary under the name of the Immaculate Conception. It served as a place of worship for the parish of Grand-Bourg, which had been erected since 1660, and was celebrated every 8 December.

Ranked at the Historic Monuments on July 25, 1979, the church underwent notable restoration work, notably in April 2013, when its five bells and bell tower were restored. It is attached to the diocese of Basse-Terre and Pointe-à-Pitre, stressing its importance in the local religious landscape.

Architecturally, the church occupies a central place in the city of Grand-Bourg. Although the stylistic details are not specified in the sources, its classification and location make it an emblematic monument of the island. The available data also mention its communal property and its potential openness to the visit, although these aspects are not detailed.
