Origin and history
The church of Saint-Louis de Fort-Louis, located in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region, is a religious building whose history dates back to the seventeenth century. The present church, built between 1964 and 1971 by architect Fernand Guri, replaces an earlier building erected from 1724. The latter, marked by a bell tower, was partially destroyed in 1963, requiring complete reconstruction.
The monument has been classified as historical monuments since 1927, a protection that originally concerned the bell tower of the old church. Sébastien The Prestre de Vauban, a famous military engineer, is associated with this site, although its exact role in the design of the building is not detailed in the sources. The present church, owned by the municipality, thus embodies historical and architectural continuity in this Alsatian village.
Fort Louis, founded in the 17th century in a context of strategic fortifications, houses this place of worship that reflects the architectural changes and upheavals experienced by the region. The church, through its modern reconstruction, also bears witness to contemporary adaptations while maintaining a strong heritage dimension, linked to its classification and its military and religious history.
