Origin and history
The church of the Assumption, located in La Chaume en Côte-d'Or (Burgundy-Franche-Comté), is a Romanesque building originally built in the 13th century. At that time, the village still belonged to Champagne, and the church was built under the authority of the bishops of Langres. Its architecture reflects the characteristics of the period, with a unique nave and a Latin cross plan, typical of medieval rural churches.
The church was restored in 1850, marking a desire to preserve this local heritage. It has been officially listed in the Historical Monuments Inventory since 6 March 1950, recognizing its architectural and historical value. Its massive bell tower, pierced by arches, and its bedside adorned with an oculus and a rosette illustrate the influence of primitive Romanesque and Gothic styles.
Inside, the church houses remarkable furniture, including ten wooden statues from the 17th and 18th centuries and two 17th century carved lutrins, classified as objects since 1966. These elements bear witness to the artistic and religious evolution of the region over centuries. The exterior screw staircase and the wooden vaults add to the architectural richness of the place.
Today, the church of the Assumption remains a symbol of local heritage, managed by the municipality of La Chaume. Its central location, Church Square, makes it a focal point of the village, while its history reflects the political and religious transformations of Burgundy-Franche-Comté, between Champagne and Duchy of Burgundy.
