Church of Boulouneix: inscription by decree of 22 June 1946
Origin and history
The church of Boulouneix, classified as a Historical Monument since 1946, is a remarkable example of 12th century Romanesque architecture. Its porch, composed of three arcades surmounted by an entablement, supports five other arcades, each supported by three columns decorated with carved capitals representing characters and animals. These artistic details bear witness to the craftsmanship of the period and the symbolic importance of the building in the region.
The nave of the church has undergone notable changes over the centuries: the primitive vault has been removed and replaced by a wooden vault, which has led to an overhang of the structure. The choir was marked by four imposing granite pillars, also with carved capitals. The bell tower, with a dome, completes this architectural ensemble, reflecting the stylistic characteristics of the Romanesque churches in southwestern France.
Located in the Dordogne department of La Gonterie-Boulouneix, this church belongs to the commune and remains a valuable testimony of medieval religious heritage. Its listing in the Historical Monuments inventory in 1946 underscores its heritage and artistic value. The protected elements include the porch, nave, choir and bell tower, which together illustrate the architectural and cultural evolution of the area in the 12th century.
