Origin and history
Saint-Roch de Fortuniès Church is a Catholic religious building located in the hamlet of Fortuniès, in the municipality of Dienne, in the department of Cantal. It is dedicated to Roch de Montpellier, holy protector invoked against epidemics, especially plague. Its interior architecture and decor, including a stand, confessional and built-in baptismal tank, date mainly from the 19th century, although its origins date back to the 14th century. This mixture of periods reflects stylistic evolutions and liturgical needs over the centuries.
The church was listed as historic monuments by an order of 28 October 1993, thus recognizing its heritage value. In the 1980s, the building was at risk, which led to the creation of the "Dienne Patrimoine" association in 1988. Thanks to the mobilization of this association and the municipality, several restoration campaigns were carried out, including the renovation of the lauze cover in 1995 and the beginning of a total restoration in 2022. This work aims to preserve this emblematic local heritage.
The administration of the church is now the responsibility of the municipality of Dienne, which owns it. Although the practical information on the visits or services offered (such as room rental or guest rooms) is not specified in the available sources, its registration in historical monuments and restoration efforts demonstrate its importance for the local community and regional heritage. The building is referenced in the Mérimée and Clochers databases of France, which facilitates its identification and cultural development.
