Origin and history

The church of the Assumption of Fontcovery-la-Toussuire was rebuilt in the second half of the seventeenth century, after the partial destruction of the previous building caused by lightning. This new building incorporates remarkable architectural elements, such as the pendentive vault of the avant-chœur, decorated with medallions of stucco made by sculptors Dominique Blanc and Claude-François-Antoine de Morillon. These decorations, typical of Savoyard Baroque art, bear witness to a refined local know-how.

The bell tower's arrow, shot down during the French Revolution, was rebuilt in 1864 after an extension of three metres. The 19th century marked a major phase of interior renovation: the altarpiece (restored in 1813 by the sculptor Perracio), the pulpit (1823), the communion table (1837), and the high altar (made in 1850 by the Gilardi brothers) were added or reworked. The wall paintings and the stand (1827) complete this set, reflecting the evolution of liturgical tastes.

Near the church stands a monumental cross in tuff, erected in 1720 by the brotherhood of the Blessed Sacrament. This small monument, originally placed in the centre of the cemetery, was moved near the chapel of La Salette. Its pyramidal pillar, surmounted by a sphere and a metallic cross executed by Claude Marchal, illustrates local devotional practices. The ensemble (church and cross) has been inscribed in the Historical Monuments since 1990, highlighting its heritage value.

The building, owned by the municipality, embodies the architectural and artistic transformations of Savoy between the 17th and 19th centuries, mixing baroque heritage, post-revolutionary restorations and adaptations to modern cultural needs. Its location in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, in an Alpine village, strengthens its anchor in the religious and social history of the region.
