Origin and history
The Church of the Assumption-de-la-Vierge de Landreville, located in the Aube department in the Grand Est region, is a building built between the twelfth and sixteenth centuries. The stone square bell tower, covered with slate, is the only vestige of the original 12th century church. Subsequent reshuffles profoundly altered its structure, notably with the reconstruction of the choir and transept in the 16th century, then of the nave and collaterals in the 18th century.
The interior of the church is distinguished by its nave carried by six pillars, flanked by two collaterals and surmounted by arches. The transept, consisting of two spans in length and three in width, is covered with arches on cross-sections of warheads. The choir, delimited by a five-paned apse, has a beamed vault with six branches of warheads, supplemented by liernes and thirdons. The high altar and side altarpieces, dedicated to the Virgin and Saint Béline, are the work of Jean-Baptiste Bouchardon, an 18th-century artist.
The 19th and 20th century stained glass windows adorn the thirteen bays of the exterior walls. The building also houses many reliquaries. Ranked a historic monument in 1989, the church reflects a complex architectural history, marked by successive additions and transformations. Its interior design, made in the eighteenth century, bears witness to the artistic and religious importance of the place.
The church is located at approximately 1 Rue de l'Église, 10110 Landreville, in the Aube department. It belongs to the municipality and is fully protected, including the calvary, the grid of the old cemetery with its two batteries, and the sacristy. Its architecture thus blends Romanesque, Gothic and classical elements, illustrating the evolution of styles throughout the centuries.
