Origin and history
The Assumption-de-la-Vierge church of Rosenwiller, located in the Lower Rhine in the Grand East region, is a historical monument dating back to the 1st quarter of the 13th century. It is distinguished by its 14th century Gothic choir, its seven characteristic openings, as well as its bell tower and western portal, which have been included in the additional inventory of historical monuments since 1983. The murals, on the other hand, were classified in 1898, reflecting their early heritage value.
The early construction of the late 12th or early 13th century left only the walls of the bell tower. The building evolved with the addition of the Gothic choir in the 14th century and then benefited from recent restorations supported by the Heritage Foundation, inaugurated in April 2023. The church has always been a place of Marian pilgrimage, and until the 17th century it hosted the annual meetings of the confraternity of the women, highlighting its central role in local community and religious life.
Inside the church is rich furniture, including an organ by Marc Garnier (1998), three bells, a master altar dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin, as well as high-quality altarpieces, statues and windows. Among the notable elements are a Virgin with Child, a calvary, and murals that enrich her artistic heritage. These characteristics make the church a prominent example of Alsatian religious architecture, mixing medieval heritage and contemporary restorations.
The building, located in the Church Square in Rosenwiller, is located in the historical and cultural region of Alsace. Its history reflects the architectural and spiritual evolutions of the region, while maintaining tangible traces of past religious and artisanal practices, as evidenced by the preserved objects and decorations.
