Origin and history
Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption de Massac Church, located in the Charente-Maritime department of New Aquitaine, is a religious building dating back to the 12th century. It is distinguished by its Romanesque architecture, including its bell tower arcade, its portal adorned with carved capitals (human and animal heads), and a vaulted apse in cul-de-four. Inside, the nave, initially vaulted in a cradle, lost its original cover, replaced by a frame, but retains traces of this vault as well as four Romanesque capitals. The choir, vaulted in a cradle, also houses capitals with characters, while the apse presents a fresco depicting God the Father surrounded by cherub heads.
The church was listed as historic monuments by an order of 12 January 1931, recognizing its heritage value. The Romanesque façade, with its three-bayed bell tower adorned with archvolts decorated with relief stars, bears witness to the local medieval craftsmanship. The portal, with its carved legs, and interior elements such as frescoes and capitals, offer an overview of the religious art and Romanesque architecture of the region in the 12th century.
The property of the church belongs to the municipality of Massac, and its exact address, according to the Merimée base, is 8 Street of the Church. Although some parts of the building have undergone modifications (such as the nave), the preserved Romanesque elements, such as the capitals and frescoes, make this a valuable testimony to the medieval religious heritage of Charente-Maritime.
