Origin and history

The Church of the Assumption of Mazerolles-du-Razès, located in the Aude department in the Occitanie region, dates from the 14th century. It is distinguished by its simple architecture, with a rectangular plan including a nave extended by a sanctuary. The current false vaults are recent, while the north wall reveals two distinct parts: a mid-aircraft to the east and a more brief aircraft to the west. Originally, the sanctuary was illuminated by an oculus and a third-point window, while the northern windows of the nave, pierced in 1878, symmetrically resemble those of the older south.

The south gate, in broken arch, is decorated with columnettes bearing capitals carved of foliage. Above, a console was initially to carry a statue, now missing or masked by the porch. The bell tower-wall, characteristic of the building, is composed of the back wall of the nave surmounted by a triangular bell tower. It has a corbellation to the east, supported by quadruple crows, and a spiral staircase in the southwest corner. The base of the bell tower, in assembled sandstone, supports three large bays in full hanger, while the upper part, in brick, forms a triangular gable pierced with six bays spread over three levels.

The church depended spiritually on the archbishopric of Narbonne and temporally on the abbey of Montolieu. In the 10th century, it was a dependence of Camon, attached in 943 to the monastery of Lagrasse. It is uncertain whether the present building occupies the site of this early church. The bell tower and the gate were listed as historical monuments by order of 29 November 1948, recognizing their heritage value.

The town of Mazerolles-du-Razès, in Aude, is now the owner of the building. Although the sources mention an approximate location (estimated at 5/10), the church remains a medieval architectural testimony, marked by later modifications such as the north windows pierced in the 19th century. Its history reflects the links between local religious authorities, from the Abbey of Lagrasse to the Archdiocese of Narbonne, in a region where parish churches played a central role in social and spiritual organization.
