Origin and history
The church of the Assumption-de-Notre-Dame de Courgis is a religious building located in the village of Courgis, in the department of Yonne, in the region Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Built mainly in the 13th, 15th and 17th centuries, it reflects the architectural and spiritual evolutions of these periods. Its designation as a historic monument in 1929 reflects its heritage importance and the desire to preserve this emblematic place of worship in the region.
Medieval and modern churches such as Courgis played a central role in the life of Burgundy rural communities. They served not only as a place of prayer, but also as a gathering point for social, political and cultural events. At the time, the local population lived mainly in agriculture and viticulture, activities still present in this part of the Yonne.
These religious buildings often embodied the pride and identity of the villages, while being markers of local and regional history.
