Origin and history

The church of the Assumption-de-Notre-Dame de Revigny, located in the Jura, seems to be as a whole dating from the sixteenth century. It replaced an earlier chapel, attested after 1133, whose existence suggests an ancient religious occupation of the site. Although its main structure dates back to the Renaissance, later changes marked its history, including the partial reconstruction of the bell tower in 1660, limited to its upper part according to available sources.

The openings of the nave, characteristic of the seventeenth or eighteenth centuries, bear witness to stylistic adaptations after its initial construction. In the 19th century, the bedside bay was enlarged, reflecting liturgical or aesthetic needs. In 1850, architect Vittot proposed the addition of an octagonal arrow, but the final restoration retained the original roof, thus preserving part of its historical aspect. These transformations illustrate the continuous adjustments experienced by the building over the centuries.

Ranked a Historical Monument in stages, the church received first protection in 1991 (partial listing), then a full ranking in 2024, including its murals. These measures highlight its heritage value, both architectural and artistic. A communal property, it now embodies a major religious and cultural heritage for Revigny and his region, marked by centuries of local history and community practices.
